Well water has become one of the most necessary sources of drinking water in many remote regions. Many residential settlements are also relying on ground water as a major resource of water.
Just as we have water bodies and water sources on the earth’s surface, there are also a lot of springs and water sources under the surface of the earth. After rain falls on the surface of the earth, a large amount of it gathers in water bodies, like rivers, lakes and oceans. Most of us do not know it but a huge volume of water seeps down into the ground and keeps on penetrating into the surface of the earth. This kind of water keeps on collecting and eventually underground streams are formed. Gravity of the earth also pulls down a large amount of water into the ground through the water bodies. A large volume of this water is absorbed by the soil and rocks. Thus, as you start digging downwards, into the surface of the earth, you will observe that the soil and debris that you encounter are moist. The sources of underground water start from the highland areas to the land areas and finally combine some or the other water bodies. The speed of the stream naturally purifies the water. Thus, the water wells near the rivers have clean water. In other places, there is a high chance of contamination. Contamination of well water is usually divided into three categories: Chemical or mineral contamination, biological contamination and human contamination.
Among the 3 types of contamination, the chemical and biological contamination occurs normally, due to the presence of some or the other minerals or microbes. The human contamination happens due to human error and negligence. This type of contamination occurs in the well itself and is very hazardous. The well water filtration systems are basically designed to remove this kind of contamination.
The well water filtration systems are primarily categorized into three stages or rather three steps of purification. The first stage in a well water filtration system is the physical filtration. In this step, simple water filters are utilized to remove dirt from the water, for example, screens and sand filters. In present times, the idea of charcoal filters is also being used by many well water filtration systems. The primary aim of this stage is to remove all the harmful particles in the well water.
The second step in a well water filtration system is chemical water purification. The water that is taken out from deep wells often contains excessive elements, like, calcium or carbonates and other compounds. These minerals are totally non hazardous; however, if they are consumed in large amounts, they can prove to be a health risk. In order to decrease the amount of these minerals, softening of water or mixing chlorine in water is done.
The third step in a well water filtration system is the biological filtration of water. The water that is taken to the surface of the earth often contains small volumes of bacteria and algae that may spread harmful illnesses. During the biological filtration of water, these microbes are inactivated. Some producers of well water filtration systems nowadays have come up with a good home well water filtration design, where ultraviolet rays are utilized to purify water.
