Water Treatments

Many people believe water treatments are mainly for the water they drink each day. While this is included and very large percentage of water treatment, but there are also other water that needs special treatments. Therefore, water treatment is a broad term meaning to treat the water in order for the desired use. For instance, water treated with chlorine for swimming purposes is not suitable for drinking, but it is for swimming.

Untreated water is not suitable for human consumption, so it has to go through many water treatments in order to remove bacteria, solids, algae, fungi, viruses, minerals, iron, and sulphur. Additional chemicals removed during water treatments for drinking water are pollutants and fertilizers. Once the water has undergone the treatments, it is then suitable for human consumption and becomes available to the public with a product known as tap water.

The tap water can undergo further water treatments, as is the case with bottled water to remove further contaminants or chemicals with an end-result of the water not having a specified taste as tap water does. The bottled water industry is quite large and results in annual sales in the billions, particularly in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Developing countries have serious health problems directly related to the untreated or “raw” water since they do not have the capabilities of treating their water supply. Because of this growing concern, many organizations have undertaken efforts to help these countries treat its own water supply in an effort to rid these countries of water-related diseases.

Water treatments are a necessity for many desired outcomes of the water. Water supplies from any river cannot simply be used in it raw-state because if it were, disease would follow; especially if the water is consumed in its raw form, as noted in many developing countries.
